The biggest and most important ceremony of the red road
The Sundance is an ancient rite that originated with the Lakota of the great plains of South Dakota. It is one of the seven sacred ceremonies and the most prominent one of the Lakota and northern tribes. The ones that dance have made a personal commitment, first and foremost to the Creator. In this commitment, one vows to give of themselves for the wellbeing and healing of others as well as all life.
The Sundance lasts the duration of four days. Each dancer maintains a sacred fast; that they have committed to not eating nor drinking water or other liquid, they will not touch any of these things. In this offering they are dedicating themselves to a spiritual life through a deep connection to the Great Spirit. It is an opportunity that transcends beyond the boundaries of oneself and emerges with the universal energies understanding balance and harmony with all life.
The Sun Dance is a very elaborate and extremely sacred ceremony, and because of its importance and deep meaning, little can be shared about it.
Those who wish to truly understand this ceremony must witness it personally, immersing themselves in the experience and respecting the sacredness of this powerful act of surrender and devotion.
